It sounds like it is only a matter of time before these phones will be able to do jyotish to go as good as my old zire pda. Do you agree??
God bless,

Laurie

Comment on Cell Phones and Linux Software and PDA backups

Thanks but I reset the simulator and was able to install the demo version on the SmartPhone simulator from the emulated storage card. I looked okay on the 176x~200 screen on the smaller phone. The original programs were design for a 160x160 screen. They may be a little harder to use on an actual cellphone emulating a cursor and the versions I plan to develop will be easier to use in that environment without using a cursor.
Comment on Cell Phones and Linux Software and PDA backups

Hello Brian,
Actually i have 2 smartphones namely M600i and P1i from Sonyericsson and their resolution is 2.6” 240 x 320 pixels, 262k colour touchscreen. They work both with touch as well as stylus.

I am using Palm softwares on both of them. They both run on Symbian UIQ 3.0 Platform. I downloaded the beta from the discussion forum of styletap where symbian beta is being discussed. If u want i will send u pics of softwares running on these phones.

Comment on Cell Phones and Linux Software and PDA backups

I downloaded the demo and tried it with the Windows Mobile Emulator and it ran Jyotish To Go fine. I have been unable to get the SmartPhone Emulator to see the "storage card" which is just a directory on my PC and install the software. What is the resolution of your M600i? Display on smaller phones may not be that great which is one of the problems for astrology mobile phone programs.

Of course Palm simulators have been around for a long time. The development kit came with one and it was based on the old Amiga emulator because the Amiga was a Motorola 68000 system as was the Palm.

Comment on Cell Phones and Linux Software and PDA backups

Recently i discovered a website called www.styletap.com which specialises in making crossplatform softwares. they have already a software which enables u to run Palm softwares on Pocket Pc. Likewise they have a beta for symbian Series 60 3rd edition and Symbian UIQ 3.0 smartphones from Nokia and Sonyericsson. This beta allows palm softwares to run on phones based on these operating systems. i have downloaded the beta and enjoying my palm jyotish softwares namely "jyotish to Go" and "Mooncast" on Sonyericsson M600i. If anybody has an interest in using smartphones other than from Palm this is the right place to go.

Comment on Happy Diwali and Quick Jyotish for Windows Mobile

No, because it uses Microsoft Windows Mobile 6 Standard which is the cellphone specific OS. If it ran Microsoft Windows Mobile 6 Classic you'd be okay. Unfortunately I can't just create a program that runs with that OS as most cellular providers won't let you install it without it being "certified" which is too expensive for the small Jyotish market so only big companies with software that will sell in the thousands need only apply. In my article I mention that this is a problem obviously for a lot of niche market programs. Some, like medical applications can afford to amortize such a cost to their users because they can afford but the "counter culture" Jyotish market is not that affluent to afford a small application that might cost as much as $500. So Google's Android project and some other projects especially in Linux where I can use C and not have to learn that horrible Java language are attempting to address this issue.

It is probably confusing to some of my users as there are both Palm and Pocket PC phone units that have dual operating systems, one for the phone and one for software. My programs will run on those and I have customers using them. The other problem is that Jyotish Tools for the Pocket PC is for a 320x240 screen and would display or scroll well in your new phone which a different screen size.

Comment on Happy Diwali and Quick Jyotish for Windows Mobile

Hi Brian,
Just picked up a little ASUS mobile/handheld thing.
