Quick Jyotish for Android Phones Released

I  just released Quick Jyotish for Android phones today.   The program has been ready for a while but it didn't make much sense to upload it to the Android Market until the Android 1.5 OS updates got pushed to phones.  That started happening last week.   The program is free and uses the Soft Keyboard so that entry is easy from Portrait mode.    When entering chart data one can access Google Maps to find a location and the coordinates will be inserted into the chart form.

Next MoonCast for the Android will be on sale at the Android Market a planned release next week.  I've also been working on Android versions of Jyotish Tools and an enhanced version of Quick Jyotish with more features including up to date Systems Approach options. According to an article on the New York Times Technology Blog  Google expects to see 18 mobile phones on the market by the end of the year.  These will be available from many different wireless companies and in many parts of the world.

That's because mobile phones use a Smartphone version of the OS.  Jyotish Tools for the Pocket PC is for PDAs not phones.  What gets confusing is there are a few phones that have dual OS's.   I can't keep up with those but I think Palm did some Treos that way.   Smartphones require certification and there is no incentive for the expense of the given the small Jyotish market.  Better to get an Android phone like the HTC Magic which incendently went on sale this week in India through Airtel.  More on this in a new blog article.  Right now I have GPS Prasna, Quick Jyotish and MoonCast which will work on the HTC Magic.  I can't tell from Airtel's website nor any of the articles published this last week if their phone has access to the Android Market.  If not I can at least make the free Android applications available from my website.  There are more full featured Android versions in the works.

Some customers have had success finding refurbished Pocket PC PDAs for good prices online.  As long as they have Pocket PC 2002 or better insalled including the Windows Mobile Classic editions and a 240x320 display then Jyotish Tools for the Pocket PC will work.  On later editions be aware the installer will put up an message saying that the program is for an earlier version of the OS and may not work properly but just continue on as that is a blanket warning and there is nothing in the program that won't work outside of getting the Help file because I think they changed the default location of where that file is supposed to be.

That was very informative. Sufficient enough to find a suitable compatible device.
    Thanks

I tried this on HTC Hero, Android 1.5, the charts dates can not be set from File->New (eg:-19.36 time and date Dec 14, 1968), as it wont accept the date time parameters.

Useless until this can be fixed.

It works with the emulator.  It will need the Soft Keyboard for entry on the Hero.  You may have to turn the Soft Keyboard on from the Settings.  I don't have an actual device as Android ran out of the developer units.

Also you may need to do a "long press" on those fields to bring up the Android software keyboard.  However this also seems to be a problem with the Hero that developers are beginning to report.  A long press should not be necessary.  Android would prefer we used widgets but one design of the data form with widgets was rather clunky.  And I would assume you would also want to enter the name for the chart as well as the place?  Also Android's date widget only works back to 1900 and I know people like to do historical charts and the planetary engine is capable of dates back to 1600.   Text entry for the year allows that.

If this is going to be a problem for some devices I may add a menu option for a widget type form.  But I'm not sure what to do about names and places in that method.  Android being new has some things that need to be worked out yet but with up to 18 phones available by the end of the year it is probably a more viable option.

Not long ago when I was looking for information about phone companies found a review of all Adroid programs (at the files search engine http://rapid4me.com and it seemed to me they were very impressive. The future of this company must be very bright. Though sometimes some functions can be tiresome, for example when you don't want anybody to know where you are.

Which company?  Android or JyotishTools?   Android is a part of Google and easy to find on Google maps.  JyotishTools like most shareware companies is a home business so obviously I'm not going to post my home address.  All business is done on the web through a third party (SWReg) as I don't do any hard sales (software on disks).   The Android programs except for MoonCast are free to download and try out and there is a free limited function demo of MoonCast too.

Does that maybe suggest it may be you who is making the error?   The number one reported bug in my programs is the one between the user's ears. <grin>
